Illinois will be missing one of its quarterbacks in practice for a couple of weeks, Bret Bielema revealed. Freshman QB Donovan Leary will be out for 2 weeks after having a small procedure, Bielema told reporters, per Jeremy Werner of 247Sports.

Leary won’t be available for Illinois’ Week 0 opener against Wyoming, Saturday, Aug. 27. If he returns in 2 weeks, he’ll be back in practice just before the Week 1 game at Indiana on Friday, Sept. 2.

Though Bielema said Leary was doing well, the competition for the starting job is between Art Sitkowski and Tommy DeVito with Ryan Johnson behind them.

Leary, out of Timber Creek in New Jersey, was a 3-star recruit on the 247Sports composite rankings for the class of 2022. He signed with Illinois over other scholarship offers, including Boston College, Central Michigan, Colorado State, East Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rutgers, Temple, Toledo, and Virginia Tech.
