Bret Bielema was all smiles by the time the final whistle blew for Saturday’s season-opening win over Wyoming. However, he was not always happy with the way things were going for Illinois.
Heading into halftime, Bielema was visibly upset while leaving the field and heading to the locker room. He expressed some frustration with penalties during his on-field interview and reiterated that in his postgame press conference.
Bielema admitted after the game that he was “pissy” about the penalties during the first half.

Illinois did put up 17 points in the first half and entered the break up by two touchdowns. However, some drives did stall out as a result of penalties.
Against Wyoming, Illinois was able to avoid seriously shooting itself in the foot with those mistakes, something else Bielema pointed out after the game. In order to remain competitive in B1G games this season, the Illini will need to clean things up for conference play.
#illini Bret Bielema: Excellent that the mistakes we made today didn't really hurt us.

Conference play for the Illini happens right away in Week 1 with a quick turnaround. Illinois will travel to face Indiana in a Friday night matchup for the Hoosiers’ season opener.
