Former Illinois basketball player Robert Archibald has died at the age of 39.

The University of Illinois sent out its condolences on Friday. He was a member of the Fighting Illini basketball program from 1998-2002, and played on two B1G championship-winning teams in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

At 6-foot-11, Archibald was an imposing center for Illinois during his career. In the 2000-01 season, he averaged 7.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. The following year, he improved his averages to 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Both of those Illinois teams reached the NCAA Tournament.

Archibald was drafted by the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies in 2002 and he appeared in 44 career games in the league. He also had stops with the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors before moving on to play in Europe. He also competed with the British national team in the 2012 Olympics.

The cause of death remains unknown at this time.
