Former Illinois K James McCourt did not have to wait long for a new NFL opportunity. After being waived by the Los Angeles Chargers, McCourt has been claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars have been using training camp to find a kicker. As News4Jax notes, Jacksonville has cut 3 kickers so far, letting go of Ryan Santoso, Andrew Mevis and Elliott Fry already.

McCourt is trying to make it onto an NFL roster as a rookie. He spent 6 seasons at Illinois, redshirting in 2016 and using his COVID-19 waiver to return in 2021.

McCourt holds the Illinois record for most career 50+-yard field goals in program history with 8. His 4 50+ field goals in a single-season, which he accomplished, twice is also a program record. In 2021, McCourt made the sixth-most field goals in a season in Illinois history (18).
