Game-changer: Illinois picks off Purdue in endzone, takes 4th quarter lead on ensuing drive

Illinois was moments away from giving up a game-changing touchdown to Purdue in the second half, but Bret Bielema’s defense came through with a big play.

Instead of a Boilermakers touchdown, Illinois picked off Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell in the endzone to keep the score tied at 6-6.

That’s Kerby Joseph making the play. He’s in his senior year for the Illini, and recorded his first career interception against Virginia back on Sept. 11.

Illinois’ offense responded to the big play by putting points on the board. Running back Josh McCray busted a 38-yard run to start the drive, and Illinois was later able to convert its third field goal of the game.

Illinois is looking for its second victory over Purdue in their last three meetings. The Illini were victorious in 2019, while Purdue won this matchup in 2020. The all-time series record is tied 45-45-6.
