While Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters returned to practice last week, he had not been cleared to see any action.

The Illini suffered a disappointing 37-30 home loss to UTSA with Rutgers transfer Artur Sitkowski behind center. On Monday, Illini head coach Bret Bielema said that Peters has not been cleared for contact yet, but will go through active drills.

Peters was hurt during the first quarter of the Illini game against Nebraska in Week 0 after being sacked. He didn’t return and took a cart to the locker room.

Sitkowski entered the game and played well, passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns, completing 12 of his 15 passes leading the Illini to a 30-22 win over the Huskers. A transfer from Rutgers, Sitkowski had a rough freshman campaign with the Scarlet Knights throwing for 18 interceptions with only 4 touchdowns, but has played well for the Illini.

While the assumption would be that upon Peters return he would assume the starting role, Bielema was willing to commit to that.

Look for Sitkowski to be under center when Illinois travels to Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 11 for an 11:00 AM kickoff.
