Illinois defensive back Bennett Williams is no longer a member of the football program. The sophomore was dismissed for another violation of team rules.

A report first came out late Wednesday night from WCIA3 saying that Williams was booted from the Illini’s football team. According to the report, the defensive back was dismissed for off-field issues.

Williams served a three-game suspension for a violation of team rules to start the 2018 season. He appeared in the first half of Illinois’ game against Penn State before leaving with a hamstring injury. It was the only game he participated in and he recorded just one tackle.

On Thursday morning, Williams confirmed his dismissal in a post on Twitter.

“A part of growing up is realizing that sometimes relationships don’t work out,” Williams wrote. “I’m sad to say that I’m no longer part of the University of Illinois football team. I take full responsibility for my actions that contributed to this and I’m sorry that we couldn’t make it work.”

Williams is the third Illinois player to leave the program since the start of the season. Offensive lineman Reuben Unije and quarterback Cam Thomas have also departed.

As a freshman, Williams turned heads with his play, recording 64 tackles and three interceptions in 11 games for the Illini. He was expected to be a key member of Illinois’ defense again this fall.
