Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters was complimentary of Nebraska’s offense on Monday as he prepares his team to take on the Huskers on Saturday.

Walters said their No. 1 objective will be limiting production from quarterback Adrian Martinez.

Last season, Martinez completed 71.5 percent of his passes, but many were in short range. He averaged just 7.0 yards per attempt and threw 4 touchdown passes in 7 games.

Martinez can also be effective on the ground. He’s rushed for over 500 yards in all three of his seasons with the Huskers. He increased his rushing efficiency to 5.7 yards per carry last season and scored a career high-tying 7 rushing touchdowns.

He also noted that Scott Frost’s offenses tend to have a lot of “window dressing” and that would be something the Illini are prepared for.

Walters is in his first season as Illinois’ defensive coordinator after spending the previous five years at Missouri. Despite having plenty of experience as a defensive coordinator, Walters said he will be deploying schemes that he hasn’t used in the past.

Illinois hosts Nebraska on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.
