It took some time, but Illinois finally has multiple in-state verbal commitments in its 2021 recruiting class. The Illini needed to flip an offensive lineman in order to get there.

On Friday, the Fighting Illini landed a pledge from 3-star offensive lineman Zachary Barlev, a native of Plainfield, Illinois. He’s just the second in-state prospect to commit to Lovie Smith and company, joining 3-star center Josh Kreutz. Barlev had initially committed to Bowling Green but recently had a change of heart.

Barlev announced his decision with a post on Twitter. The offensive lineman swapped his commitment less than a month after giving his verbal to Bowling Green.

Barlev is a 6-foot-4, 292-pound offensive guard who received a dozen offers on the recruiting trail. In addition to Illinois and Bowling Green, he held offers from Western Kentucky, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Indiana State and others.

According to 247Sports, Barlev ranks as the No. 43 player out of the state of Illinois and is the No. 76 offensive guard of the class. He becomes the 15th player to commit to Illinois.

The Fighting Illini sit No. 56 in the national recruiting rankings and No. 11 in the B1G.
