Brad Underwood is bringing another talented prospect to Champaign.

This week, Illinois received a verbal commitment from 4-star small forward Ramses Melendez out of Kissimmee, Florida. The 6-foot-7, 190-pound prospect picked the Fighting Illini over offers from 10 other programs. Melendez made his announcement with a video post on Twitter on Monday evening.

According to 247Sports, Melendez cracks the Top 100 in the 2022 recruiting class, coming in as the No. 97 overall prospect in the cycle. He’s also ranked as the No. 13 small forward.

From Jerry Meyer, the director of basketball scouting at 247Sports:

Is a shooter with length. A mobile athlete who runs well in transition. Finishes well when has a head of steam going towards the rim. Doesn’t have a lot of explosiveness in traffic. Has a deft and promising shooting touch with a quick release off the catch. More of a catch and shoot player than a scorer off the dribble. Has a quality basketball IQ.

Illinois beat out Alabama, DePaul, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Mercer, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, USF and Virginia Tech for Melendez’s commitment.

Melendez is the second player to commit to the Illini’s 2021 class. Illinois’ class ranks 9th in the B1G and 46th nationally.
