Illinois picked up a big-time commitment in the transfer portal on Sunday afternoon.

The Illini landed Florida International transfer Demetrius Hill. He played safety at FIU and figures to be a potential immediate contributor for Illinois in 2023.

Here’s his announcement:

Hill was one of FIU’s most productive defensive players last season. He finished the year with 95 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also recorded 1 sack, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles and 2 pass deflections.

The 2022 campaign was Hill’s first as a regular contributor. He saw some playing time in 2021 as a true freshman, but didn’t break out until his sophomore year. He was named to the FWAA’s Freshman All-America team for his performance in 2022.

Hill is originally from Miami. He was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2021, per 247Sports. He was ranked as the No. 101 safety in the country for that cycle.

He is the 6th transfer to join Illinois so far this offseason. The Illini have also added another safety in Nicario Harper via the portal.
