Illinois football set a program record this week.

No, it didn’t come on the field. Instead, it was in the classroom as the Illini had 35 players earn Academic All-B1G honors on Wednesday, a new record for the school. That total was also the highest in the B1G this season.

It marks the fifth-straight year the football program has set a new record for the number of Academic All-B1G players. The total has nearly doubled since 2012, when Illinois had 18 players earn the honor. Last year, the Illini had 31 honorees.

The Illini edged out rival Northwestern for the most honorees in the conference. Northwestern had 34 members of its football team named to the Academic All-B1G list.
