Illinois had picked up some momentum on the recruiting trail over the last few weeks, but the program took a slight step backward over the weekend.
Three-star offensive lineman Marcus Harper announced that he was decommitting from Illinois and will reopen his recruitment. He made his announcement via a message on Twitter.
“After much thought and talking with my family, I am decommitting from the University of Illinois,” Harper wrote. “There is no love lost. Illinois is still in consideration.”

Harper committed to Illinois earlier this month but has had a change of heart. He was one of three players to commit to the Illini in the 2020 class and was the only offensive lineman of the early group.
The decommitment drops Illinois to the 12th ranked recruiting class in the B1G and 64th nationally.
Per 247Sports, Harper is ranked as one of the top 35 offensive guards in the class and is ranked the eighth-best player in Illinois. He has 15 offers, along with the Illini. Boston College, Indiana, Nebraska, Purdue and Louisville have all shown interest.
