Illinois offensive lineman Brevyn Jones has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal for the second time in two years. The redshirt freshman transferred into Illinois after spending one season at Mississippi State.

247Sports reported the news on Monday.

Jones initially committed to play at Mississippi State as a member of the 2019 recruiting class. As a high school recruit, Jones was a 3-star prospect out of Birmingham, Alabama. He redshirted in his only season with the Bulldogs and decided to transfer out of the program.

Jones received immediately eligibility with the Fighting Illini and was able to step on the field in two contests during the 2020 season. Illinois finished the year with a 2-6 record.

Both of the coaching staffs that Jones committed to play for have been fired. After the 2019 season, Mississippi State fired head coach Joe Moorhead and brought in former Washington State and Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach to lead the program.

Illinois AD Josh Whitman made the decision before the team’s final game to terminate Lovie Smith after five seasons. Former Arkansas and Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema was then hired to fill the vacancy.

Jones could still return to Illinois if it’s in his best interest.
