Illinois QB catches pass from himself, takes out official in craziest play of Week 3
On any given Saturday, or even any given play, you just never know what you might see in a college football game.
Take Saturday afternoon in Champagne, for instance, when the Central Michigan-Illinois game produced a play you’ve probably never seen anything like before — or may never see again.

In the final seconds of the 2nd quarter at the Central Michigan 44-yard line, Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer dropped back for what seemed like a run-of-the-mill pass play.
Then he fired the pass — and chaos ensued.
Altmyer’s throw was deflected by a Central Michigan defensive lineman, which happens all the time. But what doesn’t happen all the time — or hardly ever — came next, as Altmyer caught the deflection in the air and took off down the middle of the field to about the Chippewas’ 39-yard line.
But that wasn’t all.
When Altmyer slid to avoid any major contact from a Central Michigan defender, he instead got some contact — from the umpire, who Altmyer accidentally collided with on his way to the ground. The umpire couldn’t get out of the way in time and got taken out by his legs.
But in the end, everything was fine, as the official got up and had a wry smile on his face as he assured everyone he was OK and ready for the next play.
Illinois leads Central Michigan 23-6 late in the 3rd quarter. Altmyer, a former Ole Miss QB, is 18-of-27 for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns.
