The Ubben Basketball Complex renovation and expansion is well underway on the campus of the University of Illinois. The $40 million project is connected to a larger, $300 million goal for the university’s athletic department.

On Tuesday, it was announced that another $500,000 gift had been granted toward the Ubben prospect. It’s from Ed and Mary Kay Habens, both 1977 graduates of the university’s Gies College of Business.

“Ed and Mary Kay have exhibited unwavering support of this Athletics Department and the University as a whole,” athletics director Josh Whitman said in a statement. “They have always stepped up in very meaningful ways to ensure life-changing educational and athletic experiences for our student-athletes and many additional students in their beloved Gies College of Business.”

According to the university, the project, once completed, will expand the complex by 40,000 square feet, with the space to feature new offices for coaches and a new lobby. Also, the existing men’s and women’s gym areas will see a pair of half-courts added. In addition, the strength and conditioning area will be expanded, as will players’ locker rooms.

The Habens had previously donated $500,000 to the basketball program, with the athletic director’s suite at the State Farm Center bearing their name.

To date, $31.3 million has been raised for the project.
