Illinois star Ayo Dosunmu makes call on NBA
If you listened closely, you could hear the roaring cheers of excitement coming out of Champaign late Friday night.
The reason for that celebration was because Illinois star Ayo Dosunmu has decided to opt out of the 2020 NBA Draft and return to Champaign for his junior season with the Fighting Illini. This marks the second time Dosunmu has tested the draft waters but ultimately decided for a return to college.
Dosunmu posted a 90-second video on Twitter late Friday evening to announce his decision. While many expected that the Illinois star would keep his name in the draft, Dosunmu made it clear what his goal is when he returns to Champaign.
“First, I need that national championship,” Dosunmu said at the end of the video.
Last season, Dosunmu was a first-team All-B1G selection after averaging 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He shot 48.4 percent from the floor and also averaged nearly a steal per game.
Illinois went on to finish 21-10 overall with a 13-7 mark in B1G play.
Now, Illinois fans await the decision of big man Kofi Cockburn, who is also contemplating a return to college after entering his name in the NBA Draft. If Cockburn and Dosunmu are both back on the floor for the Fighting Illini, they’ll be a favorite to reach the Final Four next season.
