Illinois received some good news over the weekend. Tight end Michael Marchese has decided to return to Champaign for one more season on the gridiron.

Marchese made his announcement in a humorous social media post on Twitter. The tight end will be utilizing his sixth season of eligibility with the Fighting Illini.

“Back for another year! Big thank you to Bret Bielema and the whole Illini Football staff for their effort on making this a possibility,” Marchese wrote on Twitter. “Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Illinois Football next year!”

Marchese’s career at Illinois has resembled that of a journeyman, playing multiple positions throughout his time in Champaign. He’s been utilized in special teams, played linebacker and safety before making the transition to tight end. He’s racked up an array of statistics in an orange and blue uniform.

The Illinois native has collected 47 tackles, 3 pass break-ups and 2 interceptions playing defense and in special teams work. Last year at tight end, Marchese caught 2 passes for 30 yards and appeared in 11 games.

Marchese’s return will give Bielema’s squad some experience and leadership on the field.

Illinois ended the 2021 season with a 5-7 record, falling just one win shy of bowl eligibility. The Fighting Illini posted road victories over ranked teams Penn State and Minnesota and also closed the year with a win over Northwestern in a rivalry clash.
