Daniel Barker has had a change of heart, but he still isn’t planning on returning to Illinois for the 2022 season.

The Illinois tight end initially declared for the 2022 NFL Draft, planning to close the book on his college career. After further consideration, Barker decided to pursue another season in the college ranks, withdrawing his name from the draft.

On Tuesday, Barker announced that, instead of working towards the professional ranks this season, he will instead enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. He thanked Illinois for his time in Champaign but appears to be looking to move on.

Barker was the leading pass-catcher at the tight end position for the Illini during the 2021 campaign. He ranked third on the team in receptions (18) and yards (202) and tied for most touchdown receptions (4).

In four seasons at Illinois, Barker proved to be a reliable target in the passing attack. He caught 64 passes for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 12.9 yards per catch during his career.

He also scored 1 rushing touchdown.

Barker will have 1 season of eligibility remaining at his next destination. There’s no question he’ll be able to make an immediate impact regardless of where he ends up.
