Another B1G school has decided to make beer available to the public at sporting events, beginning in fall 2019.

Illinois Athletics announced on Tuesday that it will expand its beer sales to public concessions in general seating areas throughout Memorial Stadium and the State Farm Center starting this fall. Sales could actually come as early as this spring at Illinois Field and Eichelberger Field near the end of the baseball season.

“We are continually looking for ways to improve fan engagement and augment our in-game fan experience,” Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman said in a statement. “The opportunity to purchase beer at our events was the number one request in a postseason survey of our football ticket holders. Fans indicated beer sales would encourage their use of purchased tickets and would increase the length of time they stayed in the stands. Schools with public beer sales generally see fewer alcohol-related issues.”

Whitman also said Illinois has spoken with other schools that offer public beer sales to receive insight.

According to the release, beer will be available at several general stands throughout Memorial Stadium in 2019. Wider selections of beer, wine and cocktails will be only served in premium seating locations.
