Illinois unlikely to serve as bowl replacement, per report
This Bowl Season has been wild before things even got started with COVID-19 throwing a wrench in the plans. Now, fans and teams hope to get to the College Football Playoff without interruption.
Unfortunately, news broke Sunday night that the Sun Bowl was in jeopardy due to COVID cases within the Miami program. The Hurricanes officially withdrew from the game leaving Washington State without an opponent for the time being.
As the Sun Bowl searches for a replacement to face the Cougars, reports about which teams may or may not fill the void have begun to surface. Among them is a report from Pete Thamel with Yahoo! Sports, who says it is unlikely Illinois is able to make a push to play in the Sun Bowl.
I have been told that it’s unlikely Illinois will make a push for the Sun Bowl.

Already this postseason, Rutgers at 5-7 has filled in for Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl. However, that decision was announced much closer to the end of the regular season. With the timeline in play, finding a replacement for the Sun Bowl may prove too tough.
