Illinois received some disappointing news on Tuesday night, when Miami wide receiver Jeff Thomas — who had committed to transferring to Illinois — decided he would return to the Hurricanes to finish out his college career.

That news was a gut-punch for the Illini, and a thrill for the Hurricanes.

After the decision came in, several Miami players celebrated on Twitter by trolling Illinois pretty hard. One tweet in particular became pretty popular on social media:

Even new head coach Manny Diaz was chiming in after confirming that Thomas would return.

Having Thomas return to Miami is a big deal. He was the team’s leading receiver and one of the quickest players on the field.

Thomas would’ve been the highest-rated player ever to commit to Lovie Smith at Illinois.

The Illini have still had plenty of success on the transfer market this offseason, picking up commitments from Oklahoma WR A.D. Miller and Georgia TE Luke Ford. There are also three 4-star prospects in the 2019 recruiting class.

Still, Thomas slipping away stings quite a bit. And Miami isn’t letting Illinois forget it anytime soon.
