The injury bug hit Champaign again this camp, this time it was four-star freshman Marquez Beason who got bit.

Beason suffered a leg injury during Illinois’ practice on Tuesday and was carted off the field before the end of practice. The extent of the injury is unknown, and it’s still not certain whether it will cost him snaps when the season starts.

Head coach Lovie Smith said it was a “concerning” injury, but no other details emerged.

However, Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer posted a photo showing Beason on crutches and wearing a knee brace when he returned to the practice field. That’s probably an indication that the freshman will miss at least some practice time.

Beason came in as a four-star prospect and is one of the top recruits of the Smith era. As a star defensive back, he’s expected to have an impact even in his freshman campaign.

We’ll continue to monitor Beason’s status and whether he’ll be sidelined for some time with the leg injury.
