Illinois’ offense is going to look a little different than it did in 2021. Actually, it might look quite a bit different.

Following the 2021 season, head coach Bret Bielema decided to make a change on his staff. He parted ways with Tony Petersen after one season and brought in UTSA’s Barry Lunney Jr. to be the next offensive coordinator.

Lunney will have his work cut out for him, trying to improve and Illinois offense that stubbed its toe far too frequently last season. The biggest obstacle? Correcting the issues with the passing attack.

The good news for Lunney is that Illinois’ offensive line play and rushing attack actually showed signs of life last season. That’s a good starting point, even if there is quite a bit of work to be done.

On Monday, Lunney was asked about his philosophy in terms of implementing a new offense during spring. Per Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer, the new OC is hoping to get things in place “at an aggressive pace,” but he also doesn’t want to overwhelm players with too much information.

Lunney also said that, while he doesn’t have a mantra, running the offense is about players, not plays. He’ll be looking for the Illini to get the ball into the hands of its best playmakers throughout the 2022 season.

The Fighting Illini will start spring ball this week.
