No. 5 Illinois had to survive a late rally from No. 23 Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon, but the Illini prevailed 74-69.

Wisconsin’s D’mitrik Trice is the reason this game was close down the stretch. He scored the Badgers’ final 19 points, and made multiple three-pointers in the final minute to extend the game.

Wisconsin had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer in the final seconds, but Illinois chose to foul instead. The Badgers missed both free throws, and the game was effectively over. Trice finished with 29 points.

There was also a bit of controversy in the final minute. Illinois guard Da’Monte Williams and Wisconsin assistant coach Alando Tucker received double technicals after getting into an argument with just a few seconds remaining. Because the technical fouls offset, it didn’t have an impact on the score.

Illinois led this game by double digits for most of the afternoon. The Illini were without star guard Ayo Dosunmu due to a facial injury, but other players stepped up in his place. Andre Curbelo was particularly impressive, producing 17 points and seven rebounds.

Center Kofi Cockburn scored a game-high 19 points. Williams was the only other Illinois player to reach double figures, scoring 12 points.

Illinois faces No. 3 Michigan on Tuesday.
