There are now two prospects committed to Illinois’ 2022 recruiting class.
Monday afternoon, Bret Bielema landed a pledge from 3-star quarterback and New Jersey native Donovan Leary. The pro-style passer becomes the second player in the cycle to verbally commit to the Fighting Illini, joining 3-star offensive guard and Wisconsin native Joey Okla.
Leary made his announcement public with a post on social media.
“After longer conversations with my family and coaches….I have decided to commit to THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS,” Leary wrote on Twitter.

Per 247Sports, Leary is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound pro-style quarterback out of Sicklerville, N.J. He ranks as the No. 40 pro-style passer in the 2022 class and is a Top 25 prospect from his home state.
Leary received interest from a dozen other programs. He picked Illinois over offers from Boston College, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Colorado State, East Carolina, UMass, Old Dominion, Rutgers, Temple, Toledo and Virginia Tech.
Although it’s still early in the recruiting process, this seems like a strong addition for Bielema and his staff.
