Illinois defensive lineman Bobby Roundtree has undergone surgery after suffering a serious spinal injury in a swimming incident that occurred in Tampa, Florida over the weekend, according to a report.

Jeremy Werner of Illini Inquirer reported that Roundtree sustained the injury on Saturday during a swimming incident. The injury is considered very serious, leading head coach Lovie Smith and defensive line coach Austin Clark to travel to Florida to be with the defensive lineman and his family.

There was no additional information on Roundtree’s status or the nature of the incident at this time. Roundtree reportedly underwent surgery on Sunday.

Roundtree was considered to be the best defensive linemen at Illinois and arguably one of the best players on the roster. He finished the 2018 season with 66 tackles, 12.5 for loss and 7.5 sacks.

Roundtree is a native of Largo, Florida.
