It didn’t take Lovie Smith to land a new head coaching gig.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Smith is expected to be the next head coach of the Houston Texans after working as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator last season. He replaces David Culley, who was fired after just one season.

The Texans ended the season with a 4-13 record.

Smith was fired as the head coach of Illinois before the team’s last game of the 2020 season. It didn’t take him long to land on his feet in the NFL again.

From 2004-12, Smith was the head coach of the Chicago Bears and had a two-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014-15. This will be his third stop as an NFL head coach.

In his 11 seasons with the Bears and Bucs, Smith compiled an 89-87 record with three NFL playoff appearances. In 2006, Smith led Chicago to the Super Bowl.

After spending most of his career in the NFL, Smith was hired to be the head coach at Illinois.
