Ryan Walters reveals what powers second-half performances for Illini defense
Ryan Walters knows that his defense has been one of the best in the country during second halves of games this season. Illinois has allowed a total of 17 points in the 2nd half so far.
Walters explained that what it comes down to is adjustments being made. The Illinois DC has been able to switch up the gameplan based on what the opposing is throwing at them in the first half.
The Fighting Illini recently held Nebraska scoreless in the 2nd half of Week 9’s game.
Asked #illini DC Ryan Walters about why his defense has been so dominant in second halves this season (17 total points allowed), and he gave credence to second-half adjustments based on what the offense’s script showed them early in the game.

The Fighting Illini defense has been solid as a whole, not only in second halves. Illinois leads the nation in points allowed (8.9) and in total yards allowed per game (224.5).
Illinois faces a struggling Michigan State team in Week 10. The Spartans have lost 5 out of their last 6 games. Illinois last played Michigan State in 2019 and won 37-34.
That game will be broadcasted on BTN Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET from Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
