Tommy DeVito, former Illinois QB, reportedly receives roster decision from Giants
Tommy DeVito made a strong push to stick with the New York Giants, but reportedly learned his fate on Tuesday, as the former Illinois quarterback was released, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported.
DeVito in Saturday’s preseason finale completed 19 of 29 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the New York Jets, 32-24, his final chance to to make a positive impression for the coming season. DeVito threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, and was sacked 4 times.
DeVito in the preseason completed 43 of 64 passes for 453 yards with 2 TDs and 2 interceptions. His passing yardage ranked No. 6 out of all quarterbacks during preseason games, but he’s also taken 9 sacks.
In late December, DeVito learned that his additional year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA after he was trying to return to the Illini for one more season in 2023.
DeVito transferred to Illinois after he started his career at Syracuse. He set a new career-high with 2,397 passing yards last season and added 15 touchdowns for the Illini.
