It doesn’t matter how, Lovie Smith just needs to get Isaiah Williams on the field. A lot.

We’re only a week into fall camp, but already the former four-star athlete and true freshman is flashing his brilliance. First, Williams showed off his incredible speed by sprinting past every defender on the field. Later, he beat the secondary with his precision passing.

This kid can do it all.

Williams is going to be a special player, probably sooner rather than later.

Right now, Williams and Michigan transfer Brandon Peters are competing for the starting job under center. It’s easily the best quarterback situation the Illini have had since Smith took over before the 2016 season.

It’ll be interesting to see how Williams’ skillset is used this fall, and whether or not the Illini utilize some sort of dual-quarterback system, or if they use the freshman in another capacity.

One thing is for sure, Williams needs to touch the football this season. A lot.
