Griffin Palmer might be earning himself some playing time during Illinois camp this fall.

As the Illini continue to improve and prepare for the 2019 season, the team hit Memorial Stadium under the lights for some practice and a scrimmage. The night atmosphere comes just two weeks for Illinois takes the field against Akron in the season opener.

Palmer already looks like he’s in midseason form.

A pass from Coran Taylor was tossed in Palmer’s direction, with a defender making a good read on the ball. But the 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end was able to leap into the air and pluck the ball away from the defender.

It was a highlight reel catch, even for training camp. Below is the video, posted on Twitter by Illini Football:

Illinois is going to need playmakers to step up in 2019 if it wants to compete for bowl eligibility, especially in the passing game. Maybe Palmer could be that guy.

If he’s able to leap over defenders for receptions, he’ll definitely earn the chance to see more snaps this fall.
