Those who questioned the hiring of Josh Whitman as Illinois’ new athletic director were probably most opposed to his lack of Division I experience.

Whitman was the AD at Division III Washington University and he worked in the Illinois athletic department from 2005-08. He also played for Illinois in the late 1990s.

So how did Illinois welcome Whitman? By releasing a brief video of a few of his touchdowns as an Illini player:

The video doesn’t exactly scream “capable new AD” but there’s some irony in the fact that Illinois’ way of getting fans on board with the hire is by showing he scored a few touchdowns 17 years ago.

In Illinois’ defense, it’s not easy to make a hype video for your new AD. Showing him sitting down at a table with university officials wasn’t exactly going to move the needle, either.

Only time will tell if Whitman, who has a major task ahead of him, is the right fit for the job.
