Indiana football is still undefeated on the season after a 42-28 win over Maryland Saturday afternoon.

The Hoosiers are playing fantastic football right now, especially on offense. Indiana used a next level second half to completely take over the game despite Maryland pulling off crazy play after crazy play.

Indiana is now 5-0 on the season for the first time in forever, and look to continue their impressive streak next weekend at Northwestern. To hold you over until that point, here are 3 takeaways from Indiana’s high-octane win over Maryland.

Kurtis Rourke’s response is more important than his start

Indiana fans will be the first to tell you how badly Kurtis Rourke played in the first quarter of this one. The Ohio transfer threw 2 interceptions on back-to-back drives, his first and second turnovers of the season.

But the measure of a great quarterback is not his mistakes, it’s how he responds to them. Every QB on planet Earth has thrown an interception, after all.

And Rourke’s response was incredible. Indiana’s 3rd drive was a beauty and gave the Hoosiers a 7-0 lead after this toss from Rourke to Myles Price.

He then showed why he’s one of the best QBs in the Big Ten just before halftime. You can’t place this throw any better, folks.

Rourke finished his day 22/33 for 359 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Indiana improves to 5-0 for first time in 57 years

Indiana football is now 5-0 for the first time since 1967, when the Hoosiers were coached by John Pont.

Those Hoosiers finished the season 9-2, falling to OJ Simpson and No. 1 USC 14-3 in the Rose bowl. Indiana started that season 8-0 before falling to Minnesota, still their best start to a season without a tie. 1945 Indiana finished its season 9-0-1.

And if you’re wondering, the path to a 9-0 start is certainly there for Indiana this season. The Hoosiers’ next 4 games are as follows: at Northwestern, vs. Nebraska, vs. Washington and at Michigan State. Michigan and Ohio State await the Hoosiers following that stretch.

This iteration of Indiana just feels different based on what they can do offensively. At the very least, they’ll be a fun watch the remainder of the season.

Indiana’s D-line can be dominant

As strong as Indiana’s offense was Saturday, their defensive line might have been even better.

Led by Mikail Kamara, James Carpenter and CJ West, the Hoosiers got to Maryland QB Billy Edwards 5 times Saturday afternoon. Carpenter was especially impressive, totaling a pair of sacks and a pair of tackles for loss. On the day Indiana’s defense totaled 8 tackles for loss.

And though the box score doesn’t exactly show it, Maryland wasn’t able to do anything on the ground Saturday. The Terrapins finished with 113 yards rushing, but 75 of those yards came on the following touchdown, aided just slightly by an official that placed a perfect block on Kamara.
