Indiana defeated Indiana State 41-7 on Friday night in Bloomington.

This was the Hoosiers’ first win of the season after they fell to Ohio State at home in Week 1.

Quarterback Tayven Jackson was very efficient in this game as he threw for 236 yards on 21 attempts. Jaylin Lucas also had a big night, rushing for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 10 carries.

Here are 3 takeaways from Indiana’s win:

Dominant defense

The Hoosiers had no problem stopping Indiana State’s offense. The Sycamores managed just 93 yards of offense on the night. On a per-play basis, they picked up just 2.2 yards per play.

Indiana also totaled 3 sacks, 5 tackles for loss and 1 interception in the win. IU held the Sycamores’ passing attack to just 21 total yards on 11 pass attempts.

Indiana State’s only points on the night came on a 75-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

Jaylin Lucas’ speed

Indiana State had no answer for Jaylin Lucas. He was perhaps Indiana’s best offensive player on a night when several Hoosiers shined.

Here’s video of one of Lucas’ scores:

In addition to Lucas’ work in the ground game, he also had 4 catches for 39 yards against the Sycamores.

Indiana is hoping for a big season out of Lucas and fellow running back Josh Henderson in 2023. Henderson was also solid on Friday night, rushing for 60 yards and 1 touchdown on 12 carries.

Back on track

The Hoosiers had a tough draw to start the year with Ohio State in Week 1, but they’re now back on track in 2023.

Entering this game, Indiana had just a 26.9% chance to reach bowl eligibility this season according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. Winning this game likely won’t meaningfully increase that number — but a victory was necessary for IU to have a realistic chance to make the postseason.

Indiana will host Louisville in Week 3.
