Dave Wannstedt had some incredibly high praise for Michael Penix Jr. Tuesday, but some Indiana fans may disagree with his analysis.
Penix won the starting quarterback spot after a long fall battle with the Hoosiers, and he has not disappointed over the first two weeks of the season. Indiana has started 2-0 with Penix throwing for 523 yards and 3 touchdowns with 79 yards on the ground. Penix has not been without his mistakes, but there’s no denying his ability to change games with his arm and his legs.
When discussing his running ability, Wannstedt wasted no time hyping Penix as one of the best Indiana has ever seen. He quickly labeled Penix as a better runner than former Hoosiers QB Antwaan Randle El, one of the all-time greats to come through Indiana.
Wannstedt was adamant that the tape doesn’t lie:
“I said it last week, my daughters were going to Indiana when (Antwaan) Randle El was playing there,” explained Wannstedt. “I saw a lot of their games, I followed them. This guy’s got better running ability than Randle El. Watch the tape!”

For those who may be unaware, Randle El finished his college career with 3,895 rushing yards and 44 TDs. He ranks second on Indiana’s all-time list in both categories and went on to have a successful NFL career as a wide receiver.
To his credit, Penix has sidestepped the dual-threat label, saying he is a pro-style QB who can run. But there’s no denying he is impressive with the ball in the open field.
Do you agree with Wannstedt, or are you riding with Randle El?
