Curt Cignetti has led the Indiana Hoosiers to their best start in program history in his first season as head coach. The 10-0 Hoosiers rewarded the coach with an extension and a raise, per reports. The raise will make Cignetti the highest-paid employee in university history.

The coach came to Indiana from James Madison this offseason. Originally, Cignetti’s contract ran through 2029 and guaranteed the coach $4.5M in annual compensation. Cignetti’s new deal lasts through 2032 and bumps the coach’s annual compensation to $8 million.

In addition to the salary increase, Cignetti will also receive “further assurances around program infrastructure and support.” The coach released a statement after the news broke.

“I am beyond appreciative for the tremendous commitment, confidence and support from (IU) President Pam Whitten and Athletics Director Scott Dolson,” Cignetti said in a news release confirming his fresh terms. “Manette and I love Bloomington and are grateful for how the IU community has embraced us. I look forward to leading this outstanding program, and doing my part to continue the momentum for Hoosier football.”

Cignetti came to Indiana after 5 seasons at James Madison. The coach successfully transitioned James Madison from the FCS to the FBS level. Cignetti led the Dukes to an FCS National Championship Game appearance and finished with a 19-4 record in FBS play.

Now, Cignetti’s Hoosiers are ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings and have a matchup against Ohio State next weekend.
