It’s officially official, Kalen DeBoer is heading back to Fresno State.

Tuesday, FootballScoop.com reported that DeBoer was expected to be named the next head coach of the Bulldogs, replacing Jeff Tedford who stepped down following the 2019 season. That report came to fruition later in the day, as Fresno State released a video welcoming DeBoer back to Fresno State.

DeBoer spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the offensive coordinator at Fresno State under Tedford. The program experienced incredible success that season, finishing the year 12-2, defeating Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl and was ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll.

This season, DeBoer has revamped Indiana’s entire offense into a heavy passing attack. With both Michael Penix Jr. and Peyton Ramsey under center throughout the year, the Hoosiers ranked No. 2 in the B1G in passing offense, averaging 308.7 yards per game. That average ranked 13th nationally.

Because of his unique offensive mind, DeBoer’s arrival helped push the Hoosiers into their best season in 25 years, finishing the season with an 8-4 record. Indiana won road games against Nebraska and Purdue and will have a chance to get a ninth win for the first time since the 1967 season.

DeBoer has been a head coach at the NAIA level, leading Sioux Falls to three national championships in five seasons (2005-09) at the helm. He finished his run with the Cougars with a 67-3 record, a 49-1 mark in Great Plains Athletic Conference play and four national title game appearances.

This would be DeBoer’s first shot as a head coach at the FBS level.

Tedford decided to step down as the head coach at Fresno State following a 4-8 season. He was the leader of the Bulldogs for three seasons, compiling a 26-14 record with two bowl appearances.

Indiana will take on Tennessee in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 2.
