Indiana redshirt freshman running back Charlie Spegal is emerging as a potential contributor for the Hoosiers in fall camp.

IU running backs coach Deland McCullough shared his thoughts on Spegal on Friday.

“I know one thing: Nobody wants to tackle the guy,” he told reporters. “That’s one thing. Nobody wants to tackle that dude.”

Spegal, who walked-on during fall camp last season, redshirted in 2020 and contributed on IU’s scout team.

He’s originally from New Palestine, Indiana, and is listed at 5-foot-10, 219 pounds.

According to 247Sports, he had scholarship offers from Indiana State and Army coming out of high school.

Spegal had a legendary junior season for Palestine High School, totaling over 3,300 yards and 70 touchdowns against 5A competition. Still, he struggled to earn offers coming out of high school.

He’s Indiana’s all-time leader in high school rushing yards, career points, single-season rushing touchdowns, and single-season total touchdowns. He scored 175 times during his high school career and was named Mr. Indiana Football as well as Indiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2019.

Indiana will be looking to replace its leading rusher from last season, Stevie Scott, so there should be opportunity for Spegal to make an impact if he continues to impress.
