Indiana needed a second-half surge to defeat Louisville in the Empire Classic on Monday.

The Hoosiers found themselves trailing Louisville late in the second half, but rallied to a 74-66 win in the game’s final minutes. Indiana out-scored the Cardinals 13-2 over the final 3:38 of the contest.

Four different Indiana players scored in double figures. It was Xavier Johnson who led the way 14 points on 2-of-4 shooting. He went 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the win for Indiana. Johnson scored the final 5 points of the game for IU — all from the free throw line. Johnson also had a team-high 5 assists.

Indiana’s struggles from beyond the 3-point line continued on Monday. The Hoosiers shot just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. They were able to overcome that deficiency thanks to 25 made free throws vs. the Cardinals (on 34 attempts).

The Hoosiers are now 4-1 this season with their only loss coming against UConn over the weekend.

Indiana will be in action again on Sunday against Harvard.
