Indiana DC takes job at North Carolina after 1 season with Hoosiers
Suddenly, Indiana head coach Tom Allen is in the market for a new defensive coordinator.
On Saturday, North Carolina announced that it has hired Charlton Warren to be the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He will be joining former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik, who was hired to be the assistant head coach for defense.
North Carolina released a statement on the hires on Saturday. It’s a big blow for the Hoosiers, who will now be on their third defensive coordinator in three seasons in 2022.
“We’re also thrilled to welcome Charlton and his three children, Jayree, Teya, and Chase, back to the Carolina football family,” said head coach Mack Brown.” Charlton has a wealth of experience at a number of the top programs around the country, has recruited at a high level, and with his previous experience in Chapel Hill and working with Gene, I expect him to be a great fit with our staff. His work in the secondary has been very impressive throughout his career, and I’m excited to see what he can do with the talented players we have both on the current roster and coming in. We can’t wait for both Gene and Charlton to get to Chapel Hill and get started.”
Prior to Indiana, Warren spent two seasons coaching defensive backs at Georgia. He’s also had stops at Air Force, Nebraska, Tennessee and Florida during his coaching career.
Last season, Warren replaced previous Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, who left Bloomington to take a head coaching job at South Alabama. It’s going to be a hard void to fill for Allen as the Hoosiers are coming off a 2-10 season.
