A freshman defensive end has decided to leave Indiana after one season with the Hoosiers.

Rivals.com reported on Sunday that Indiana defensive end Jalen Mayala has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. The former 3-star recruit was a member of the Hoosiers’ 2020 recruiting class and appears to be ready to leave after one year in Bloomington.

Mayala did not play for the Hoosiers during the 2020 season. Indiana finished with a 6-2 record.

Mayala is a native of Lawrenceville, Georgia and is listed as 6-foot-5, 230 pounds. He was ranked as the No. 51 weak-side defensive end in the 2020 class and was listed just outside the Top 100 players from Georgia.

During the recruiting process, Mayala received offers from 19 programs. He picked Indiana over Power 5 offers from Purdue, Arizona, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Rutgers, Mississippi State, Syracuse, UCLA, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Mayala is not forced to transfer by simply entering his name into the NCAA portal. He could choose to return to IU if that’s in his best interest.
