Indiana head coach Tom Allen had a great reason to celebrate on Saturday afternoon.

The Hoosiers landed a commitment from 4-star wide receiver Jaquez Smith on Saturday, the second-highest ranked commit in the rankings era, according to Tom Brew of Sports Illustrated. Smith is the 14th player to give his verbal commitment to IU in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

Smith made his announcement with a post on Twitter.

Per 247Sports, Smith is ranked as one of the top 200 players overall in the 2021 class, coming in at No. 173 nationally. He’s also listed as the No. 31 wide receiver in the class.

Smith is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and is ranked as the No. 16 player in the state. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound receiver picked Indiana over offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Florida, Notre Dame, Tennessee and many others.

From 247Sports scout Brandon Huffman:

Trusty receiver with good size and range, strong hands and crisp route running. Able to get yards after contact, difficult to press and superb play strength to catch passes. Good body control and ability to adjust to throws, make the catch, then cut and go. Not a true burner but gets consistent separation. Projects as multi-year Power 5 starter and third-day NFL draft selection.

Smith becomes the second 4-star prospect to commit to the Hoosiers during this recruiting cycle. IU currently ranks 52nd in the national recruiting rankings and 11th in the B1G.
