Indiana could be playing for Kevin Wilson's job at Maryland
Who: Indiana vs. Maryland
When: Saturday, 12 p.m. ET
Where: Byrd Stadium, Maryland
TV: Big Ten Network
Spread: Maryland -2.5
Matchup to watch: Perry Hills vs. IU secondary
Ok, so by now you’re probably sick of me talking about Maryland’s ridiculously high interception rate. As in, the Terps could finish with the most interceptions of any FBS team in the last 20 years. Maryland has thrown 28 interceptions this year, which is eight more than the next-worst team. The teams that are tied for 10th-to-worst have thrown HALF as many interceptions. So you get it. You also probably get the fact that IU’s secondary has struggled mightily this season, especially late in games. This unit allowed 400-plus yards and six touchdown passes to Jake Rudock last week. Teams attack Rashard Fant and Jonathan Crawford regularly. Will Maryland? After all, this is an IU unit that only has seven interceptions all year. It’ll be interesting to see if either side can get something rolling for a change.
Thing I’m excited to see: Jordan Howard take over
There’s a decent chance that we’ll only see Howard play two more games at the collegiate level. That’s not to say that he’s a lock to turn pro, but he certainly has the skill set that scouts will drool over if he makes that choice. Before he does that, Howard still has a couple B1G defenses to torch. He did exactly that against one of the nation’s best run defenses last week, and could be in for another 200-yard game against the Terps. Perhaps the best way for Maryland to limit Howard’s production could be Yannick Ngakoue getting to Nate Sudfeld early on downs to force IU into some obvious passing situations. But for Ngakoue, who’s been tremendous this year, that’ll be easier said than done against one of the more underrated tackles in the country in Jason Spriggs. If IU can avoid third-and-longs, Howard shouldn’t have any problems breaking off big chunks of yards.
Number to remember: 12
That’s how many straight B1G road games IU lost. Now, to keep its bowl hopes alive, it has to do something it hasn’t done in three years. Twice. The Hoosiers proved that they can play with just about anybody at home — Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State all held on by a touchdown — but they’ve never been able to play 60 minutes on the road in the Kevin Wilson era. That’s why IU, despite the fact that it’s coming off a game in which it pushed Michigan to double overtime, is an underdog against a Maryland team also in search of its first B1G win. But if IU is ever going to end this road skid, this is as prime an opportunity as any.
Prediction: Indiana 42, Maryland 38
Something has to give, right? Indiana hasn’t been as awful as the Terps have been, but both are in the same boat. IU is likely playing for Kevin Wilson’s job. That means something. I do think Hills will run all over the Hoosier defense and we’ll see Will Likely leave his mark offensively. But for once, I think IU plays like a desperate team for four quarters and ends its three-year road skid.
