The Indiana coaching staff beat out some big-time programs to land a commitment from a heavily-recruited offensive lineman out of Ohio.
Wednesday afternoon, the Hoosiers received a verbal commitment from Carter Smith, a 3-star offensive tackle out of Powell, Ohio. He had received offers from over two dozen programs, including multiple B1G and SEC schools.
Smith announced his decision with a post on Twitter. His pledge bumps IU up to seven verbal commits in the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Smith is listed as a 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle out of Olentangy Liberty. He’s ranked as the No. 63 offensive tackle and No. 20 player out of Ohio in the 2022 class, per 247Sports Composite. His decision to commit to the Hoosiers comes just a week after taking an official visit to the Bloomington campus.
There were some big-name programs to throw an offer out to Smith, but ultimately Indiana won out. Those schools included Northwestern, Tennessee, Auburn, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Purdue and Vanderbilt.
With Smith’s commitment this week, IU is up to four verbal pledges in the month of June. The Hoosiers currently own the No. 8 class in the B1G and sit No. 34 nationally.
