Indiana's Tom Allen impressed early by freshman QB Donaven McCulley
Even with Michael Penix Jr. expected to be back for the 2021 season, Hoosiers head coach Tom Allen has been impressed by a different quarterback up to this point.
That quarterback is none other than freshman Donaven McCulley, who’s had a great fall camp thus far, at least according to Allen. He spoke glowingly about the freshman QB earlier on Monday during his media availability, including how gifted he is.
Allen says Donaven McCulley is "a gifted player." Said he's up to 215 pounds, which is significant addition since he got here. "He's such a sponge, so humble, eager to learn. Great listener."

More Allen on McCulley: "That's a good sign for his mental player and his development. He's going to be special."

Allen on QB Donaven McCulley, “You can see the talent … he’s got a quick release. He’s learning the offense.” Also praised his demeanor, ability to learn #iufb

McCulley was a 4-star recruit out of Indianapolis prior to committing to the Hoosiers and enrolled at the university this Summer.
The fact that he’s already impressing the coaching staff without even being there for spring practice speaks volumes for his talent. It’s still unlikely he starts the season as the starter (especially with Penix Jr. back and Jack Tuttle still there) but crazier things have happened.
If Penix were to get hurt again and Tuttle was to struggle, there doesn’t seem like there would be any hesitancy to throw McCulley in there.
The Hoosiers will kick their season off with a matchup against Iowa on Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
