What Indiana's Tom Allen said at weekly press conference
Indiana is coming off a 38-28 win over FIU to open the 2018 season. Though it was an up-and-down game for the Hoosiers, especially defensively, starting the year 1-0 is a great start.
Things get a little more difficult this weekend though, as Indiana welcomes ACC Virginia to Memorial Stadium for the Hoosiers’ home opener.
Last year, IU got the victory over the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. But with the Hoosiers having some depth issues early in the season, the challenge to start 2-0 increases in difficulty.
Here’s what Allen said at his weekly press conference on Monday:
On Virginia:
Tom Allen says Virginia QB Bryce Perkins "has gotten our attention very quickly" for his dual-threat capabilities. #iufb

Allen on Virginia: "It's a totally different football team than we played last year, offensively." #iufb

On Cole Gest injury and RB situation:
Allen says Cole Gest has torn his ACL and will be out for the season. #iufb

No update on Morgan Ellison's situation. Allen mentions Stevie Scott and Mike Majette as guys IU will need to step up. Ronnie Walker too. #iufb

"Seasons always give you things you don't expect. This is one of those for us." #iufb

On defensive play in Week 1:
Allen: "I did not think we played well defensively after watching the film … I expected to have some of those issues, but I felt like there were too many." #iufb

"I was tough on them today in our meetings, and challenged them on the standards we've set on defense." But also says he knows IU's got young guys who just need to improve. #iufb

Asked more specifically about defense, Allen says he challenged linebackers in particular. Also mentions DL as not playing "to the standard that we want here." But mentions linebackers specifically. Remember, Allen is an old linebacker and linebackers coach. #iufb
