Kirk Herbstreit on Indiana after CFP loss: 'They were not a team that should have been on that field'
Kirk Herbstreit is taking aim at Indiana’s inclusion in the College Football Playoff after the Hoosiers’ loss to Notre Dame. The final score was 27-17, but IU’s only 2 touchdowns came with under 5 minutes remaining in the game.
As Indiana struggled against the Irish, many fans took to social media to opine that the snubbed teams such as Alabama, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Miami would have fared better against the Irish. Herbstreit appears to agree, referencing “other teams that could have been there” when saying Indiana did not belong on the field Friday night in South Bend.
“The atmosphere was historic. The game was not,” Herbstreit said during Saturday’s GameDay. “I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘Why was Indiana in?” Indiana, with what you guys like to talk about, they have 11 wins, they’ve got to be one of the best teams. Indiana was outclassed in that game. They were not a team that should have been on that field when you consider other teams that could have been there.
“It’s no knock on Indiana, they had a great year, but we’ve got to move forward with the Playoff and hope that the committee does a better job of weighing who the best 12 are versus who’s the most deserving because by golly they got 11 wins. They didn’t beat anybody, but they got 11 wins. That’s a bunch of BS. We need to find the best teams. Last night it was incredibly evident standing on that field and watching the game the way it played out.”
There will be plenty of discussion about how the CFP selection committee should weigh strength of schedule and strength of record against teams’ number of wins and losses. For now, the first 12-team Playoff field is down to 11, and will be an 8-team field by the end of Saturday.
