Indiana finally announced the winner of the three-way quarterback competition on Monday.

It is finally Week 1 of the college football season, and the Hoosiers will open the season against Ball State on Saturday. Tom Allen and the coaching staff had been playing the quarterback battle close to the chest, but they announced a starter Monday.

In the end, Michael Penix Jr. beat out returning starter Peyton Ramsey and incoming transfer Jack Tuttle. Penix brings a lot to the table, and he also shared his reaction to the news with Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com and other media members.

On his reaction to the news:

“I was very excited,” explained Penix. “It was a hard-working process. Every single day we were out there competing. Peyton and Jack kept me on my toes.”

On advice from head coach Tom Allen:

“Just lead the team,” said Penix. “Continue to lead the team. Just go out and make sure the team trusts you and believes in you. That’s what you need as a starting quarterback.”

Does he consider himself a dual-threat QB?

“I consider myself a pro-style quarterback that can run,” Penix said.

Penix threw for 219 yards and a touchdown on 21 of 34 passing in limited action last season. He did add 45 yards on the ground and brings nice escapability to the position. Hopefully, he starts things off with a win in his first start Saturday.
