Tom Allen has Indiana on a remarkable run, but that run by the Hoosiers is inevitably leading to some key departures by his coaching staff.
This time, it is being reported that Indiana is losing its defensive coordinator to a head coaching job. Matt Zenitz with AL.com is reporting that Kane Wommack is in line to be hired to take over as head coach at South Alabama:
From me, @CregStephenson and @JTalty, per sources: South Alabama is set to hire Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack as its head coach.

Though it is a big blow, it is not a move that is terribly surprising, all things considered. It was Wommack’s defense that has been crucial to Indiana’s success this season. The Hoosiers had a particularly impressive performance in shutting down Wisconsin in Week 7.
Beyond that, Wommack’s last stop before coming to Bloomington was at South Alabama. He served as the DC there from 2016-17 before being hired as Indiana’s LB coach in 2018. He was promoted to the DC role at Indiana in 2019.
While it is a good and big step for Wommack, if reports hold true, it would mark the second straight offseason for Allen to lose a key assistant. Former offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer left after just one season in Bloomington to take over the head coaching spot at Fresno State.
Allen still has the program moving in the right direction, but the pressure will be on to replace Wommack with an elite assistant for 2021 and beyond.
